Just because she’s now officially lucky in love, recently engaged star Hilary Duff says she isn’t about to stop playing the girl searching for her soul mate

In Beauty & the Briefcase, which premieres April 18 on ABC Family, Duff plays Lane Daniels, an ambitious New York fashion writer who gets a crack at the big time when she successfully pitches a cover story to Cosmopolitan. Her assignment is to go undercover in the business world — which is overrun with eligible men in suits — and find true love.

Lane is looking for the perfect man for her, someone who fulfills all 10 points on her checklist (e.g., must be spontaneous, speak with a sexy accent). But trouble brews when a good candidate arises outside the business world. And what about the guy who might be the right one, even though he’s the complete opposite of her fantasy?

Duff spoke with me about her new movie, and breaking out of the nice-girl roles she’s known for while still making time for romantic comedies.

I’m always interested when an actor plays a journalist. You’ve been interviewed hundreds of times, so what it was like being on the other side, trying to get information for a story?
It was really fun. I have a best friend who is not a journalist but interviews people on TV for a living, so I got to talk to her a lot. A few times actually when I was on tour, they would want me to do different stuff for music channels or something. They would want me to interview someone else. I was always so nervous. It’s hard to ask people questions and kind of ask them questions they haven’t been asked a million times before. It’s definitely a hard job and it was fun for me, but the movie was about so many other things.

There’s also a Sex and the City vibe here, and I’m wondering if that’s part of what appealed to you about it.
Definitely. The fashion was really fun. Every girl can relate to clothes and stuff like that. Also, living in New York and feeling independent — being young, but trying to prove yourself and finding your place in the world. Every girl can relate to that. And guy, I guess, for that matter, but I’m assuming this movie’s a little more targeted to women and females. But I think that was a big draw for me to see how appealing it was and how relatable the storyline is.

You’re known for being into fashion. So that had to be fun to get into that world with Cosmo.
I feel really lucky in that I probably wouldn’t have the same tastes that I have now [if not for my job]. I’ve gotten to meet lots of people and work with great people. I think I know what looks good on me and what I’m drawn to. They let me have a really big part of her style. When I met with the producers … just talking about the project, each time I walked in they’re like, “Yeah, this is the character. This is exactly how we see her. Just like your style.” It was really flattering to me, and fun that I got to be part of that side of it. Instead of just showing up as an actor, I got to create her all the way around, including her wardrobe. It was fun because it wasn’t exactly how I dress. I don’t wear little business suits, and I don’t wear that much color, but I got to have big-time say, which was fun.

In your Cosmo scenes, you’re playing off Jaime Pressly, who makes for a rather intimidating editor. How was she to work with?
I loved working with her. She’s so funny. It’s hard to even get through a scene. I found myself biting a hole in my cheek trying not to laugh around her. She’s so beautiful. She’s just funny, but she snaps into character really fast, and she could be intimidating, because she’s a tiny little thing, and she gets those eyes going at you, and you’re like, “Oh, OK, I get it.”

Your character has a checklist of things she wants in a man, including his being spontaneous, having a sexy accent, etc. Do you think that’s a healthy way to approach relationships?
She does have high standards. Everyone makes a list in their heads, not everyone actually applies it. I really like that she wears her heart on her sleeve and she knows what she wants and she’s really open for love. I think it’s really hard to be that way, and it’s motivating. She’s not afraid to get burned before she gets what she really wants, and I think more people should be like that.

You have a voice-over, which is something you’ve done a lot of in the past. Is that something you like in a project, or did it just kind of work out that way?
It’s just kind of happened that way. It hasn’t been something that I’ve gone out and looked for. I think that it can be very endearing when a character talks to the viewer and they get to see a different side of them. It makes it more personal. With Lizzie McGuire especially, and this one, it was a way to get inside the girl’s head. You get to her sense of humor a little more. She says the things that she can’t say out loud, and I think that makes the project a little funnier. It’s become second nature to me.

There are three love interests that come at your character, and it’s not apparent right away which one she’s going to end up with. Were you fooled reading the script, or did you know right away who Lane would end up with?
I did not know, and I liked that. There’s some parts of the movie that are predictable, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. It’s a really heartwarming, heartfelt, sweet movie, and that’s what drew me to it. I didn’t know until maybe a little more than halfway through that she was going to end up with [spoiler], and that was a nice surprise.

There’s also a lot of physical comedy involved. Is that something that comes naturally to you?
It comes pretty naturally, but it depends on what you’re doing. There’s a scene when I’m spinning around in a chair. That did not come naturally to me, I could not find a way to make it funny or cute. Finally, I think I got it, but it took awhile. Then there’s the scene when I’m walking on the streets of New York, and everyone’s all freaking out, and I said, “Just let me do it,” and I did it the first time and that’s the one they used. It’s like everything else, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. [But] I loved that it was very physical. I started off doing that with Lizzie McGuire, and I hadn’t done it in a long time. … It always makes everybody laugh.

Lane seems very much in awe of getting into the big time. Have you felt that way in your career, maybe when you’re in a big-budget movie or working with a big-time actor, like a John Cusack from War, Inc.?
Of course. There’s definitely been a few times, and still are. … I just did an episode of [Law & Order] SVU last year, and that was real intimidating, and pretty scary for me. I’ve been lucky to work with amazing people that have been very generous and kind to me. Especially John. He was fantastic and just really gave us room to play on set. He wasn’t one of those “Hurry, hurry, we’ve got to get it done now” types. He’s a big believer in going into it until it feels right. It was a great all-around experience and also acting-wise I’d never worked like that before. And also we worked with Ben Kingsley in that movie, which was fantastic. I only had one scene with him, but it’s hard to take your eyes off him. He’s so talented. The other thing that’s made it easy for me is going on tour so many times and having to sing in front of people. You don’t have a second to hold back. You have to step on the stage at that moment. It prepares you for throwing yourself into something fast and not thinking too much about it before you do it. And that goes for getting ready to start a really challenging scene or working with someone who might intimidate you.

With movies like War, Inc., What Goes Up and the upcoming Bonnie and Clyde movie, you’re taking on roles that are edgier or darker than what people might perceive to be your comfort zone.
I wouldn’t say it’s my comfort zone. Sometimes people don’t think I can do the movies that maybe I could. I still fight for projects, and I don’t get everything that I want. It’s tough to convince people that I’m other things than just making people laugh. But I love romantic comedies, I would love to do more. They’re not always easy. They are some of my favorite movies.

ABC will be premiering Hilary Duff’s new TV movie The Business of Falling in Love on Sunday, April 18 at 8 PM ET/PT.
The story revolves around fashion journalist Lane Daniels (Duff) who goes undercover in a corporate job to date as many ’suits’ as possible for research. Gil Junger is directing the movie. He also directed the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You.
The movie is based on the book, Diary of a Working Girl by Daniella Brodsky. Hilary co-stars with Matt Dallas, Michael McMillian, Chris Carmack, Conner Adamek, Kyle Register, Joshua Preston Dulaney and Cedric N. Burton.

It was kind of close to home, then I realized, I would never say something [that Olivia says] like, Oh, this is just for the cameras. I think that’s what makes me so different from some of the other people my age. It seemed for a time there were people who hated each other and I knew they hated each other but they were in pictures together all the time, smiling and throwing their arms around each other. I was like, You’re in the same business I am how can you do that and feel okay I so wouldn’t do that.

Icon Movies UK has confirmed that Greta will be coming out straight-to-DVD in early 2010. The closest thing we got to ‘theatrical‘ was a pointless private advanced screening where a few lucky fans were able to watch it in advance.
Three years of waiting and all we get is this? I personally think it’s the distributors’ fault.

Add another movie to Hilary’s list of upcoming films: ‘The Business of Falling in Love.’
Here’s a small step back: the film is a family movie, which is different from her previous mature roles. The movie is planned to air on TV. Hilary will be executive producer to the film as well, having Gil Junger as the director.
ABC Family is teaming with Hilary Duff for “The Business of Falling in Love,” a romantic comedy based on the book “Diary of a Working Girl,” by Daniella Brodsky.

A release date should be announced soon. The movie was planned to premiere during the 2009 Cannes Film Festival with the help of Voltage Pictures, but the idea was canned. Stories of straight-to-DVD rumors started to pop up, but Voltage quickly denied it.

Hilary Duff was named “Ambassador for the Youth” in Bogota by Mayor Samuel Moreno at the Palacio Lievano (Bogota City Hall). Duff is in the Colombian capitol on an ambitious four-day mission to bring meals to the city’s underprivileged children on behalf of “Blessings in a Backpack,” a U.S.-based program, which feeds underprivileged children in grades K-10. Duff’s agenda includes distributing nutritious meals to children in orphanages and hospitals and meeting with ex-gang members.“We are honored to have Hilary Duff launch Blessings in a Backpack in Bogota,” said Mayor Moreno. “Besides helping thousands of needy children, Blessings in a Backpack is aligned with our initiative, ‘Positive Bogota: To Live Better,’ which seeks to guarantee the enjoyment of a modern, prosperous, equal, cooperative, just and participative city.”
Blessings in a Backpack, founded by Stan Curtis in Louisville, Kentucky in 2005, serves more than 90 schools across the U.S. and provides weekend nourishment to qualified children in kindergarten through grade ten so they can learn at the same rate as their classmates. “Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program,” said Mr. Curtis.
Ms. Duff, who finished a week of filming “Gossip Girl” in New York City, has a packed agenda during her visit to Bogota, which includes visits to hospitals and orphanages, meetings with ex-gang members and Colombian officials.
“I am thrilled to be in Bogota to launch Blessings in a Backpack,” said Ms. Duff. “I want to express my gratitude to Mayor Moreno for offering me the opportunity to share this program, which is close to my heart, with the children of Bogota.”

Hilary Duff's Femme for DKNY Jeans line doesn't hit racks until next month, but thanks to an ad campaign featuring the Duffster herself, we're getting a sneak peek at a few of the urban chic items.Hilary told Nylon magazine that her inspiration for the line was "just normal girls. I’ll be walking down the street and think, oh she looks cute! Especially being in New York is nice, because everyone has such unique styles. According to the news report, Sara Burke, who has aplastic anemia, requested to meet Hilary Duff through the foundation. On June 17th, she got her wish. The report doesn’t say what Sara’s experience was like meeting Hilary, but does mention why she chose Hilary:

We first got a sneak peek of Hilary Duff’s Femme for DKNY Jeans line when Gossip Girl co-star Jessica Szohr turned up at a Louis Vuitton party sporting a $59 floral cardigan from the collection, and now, the ads are out. Hilary stars alongside models Sophie Srej and Gracie Carvalho in a New York City street-inspired ad campaign. Combining Hilary’s personal style and the individuality of New Yorkers — the inspiration behind her designs — the Femme for DKNY Jeans fall ‘09 ads were shot on the Manhattan streets by Scott Schuman, best known for his street style blog The Sartorialist. Hollywood Records knew they did wrong last year when they decided to release a "best-of" including Hilary Duff's biggest hits without her approval; sales were low because of the absent promotion. But now, they seem to beg for pardon. They will be releasing another "Best Of Hilary Duff" including a different tracklist (that is rumored to include songs like 'Weird', 'Hide Away', 'Happy', 'Burned', 'Who's That Girl?', 'The Getaway', 'Gypsy Woman') and the first single off of the album will be "Holiday", a song Hilary recorded before Hollywood Records decided to go for a best-of in order to finish her six-album contract with them and that the fans really liked. A video for "Holiday" will be shot in "Hawaii or on some very beautiful island" according to a Hollywood rep who also said that "even if Hilary's contract is over with [us], we want to re-release the compilation as a 'thank you/sorry Hilary Duff!' because since you're gone, sales have been disastrous and we really want you back!". The Depeche Mode-sampling hot 2008 single "Reach Out" (featuring world-renown rapper The Prophet) will be sent to radios again alongside "Holiday" which also will be played on radio (the first Hilary Duff song to make it on radio since February 2007's mega-successful "With Love"). Hilary Duff said she "had nothing to say except for the fact that she will be filming 'Holiday' for the fans because they've been more than supportive no matter when and why".

Editor’s Note: At 21 years old, Hilary Duff is no longer a tween sensation, but she is still coming into her own. And, to that end, Duff’s making sure to take up as many good causes as possible, like her current project, the AIDS Walk. Her mother, we’re sure, is proud — and, in fact, helped shape Duff’s charitable spirit. Here the entertainer talks to wOw about AIDS Walk, ignoring backlash over her pro-gay politics, tabloid culture and how, despite her benevolent perspective, it’s fun to be bossy.
HILARY: Hi, Andrew.wOw: Hey, Hillary. How are you today?HILARY: I’m fine. How are you?wOw: I’m very well, thank you. It’s finally summer in New York City. HILARY: Oh, great! Man, I was just there and I missed it. I thought it was going to be warm and it wasn’t yet.wOw: You’re in California?HILARY: Yes, I am.wOw: So it must be nice all the time?HILARY: It is. It’s been a little gloomy lately, but I think the sun’s coming out today, so that’s good.wOw: Good news. Great. You and I are talking primarily because you’ve agreed to be the grand marshal for the AIDS Walk. So, first and foremost, why did you personally — other than because it’s a good cause — agree to participate?HILARY: Oh, there are a few different reasons, actually. This isn’t my first involvement – well, not with the AIDS Walk, but kind of in that world. I started working with a program called GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.wOw: Right.HILARY: And basically what it does is try to make schools a safe haven for kids, because in this day and age even their homes aren’t safe for them. And it’s all about not discriminating and accepting people for being different. It’s not just about being gay, either. It’s also about your race, or being different in any way and trying to just stop the hating. But obviously a lot of the kids in that alliance are gay and lesbian, and I just loved it. I loved hearing some of their stories, which were just terrible. So, I got involved and did a PSA for them. Then, when I was doing the Rachael Ray show, I met this guy who was really involved with the AIDS Walk, and he’s like, “I saw that PSA you did and it was awesome and, you know, you would be perfect to host the AIDS Walk.” Of course, it’s such a big deal and so many great people have done it before and, anyway, that I can lend my name or try and raise awareness …

wOw: I imagine a lot of your fans are fairly young, you are fairly young – 21, correct?HILARY: Yes.wOw: As we saw with Miss California, a lot of people got really angry with her for sharing her view that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Do you ever get backlash from people who object to your pro-gay, nonprofit work?HILARY: I’m sure I do, and I just don’t read it. I honestly don’t care, you know? I think that one of the great things that we, as Americans, have is the privilege of getting to have an opinion. I think everyone should have equal rights. And if people don’t like me because I believe in that then – well, you can’t make everybody happy. wOw: That’s certainly true. I want to get off-topic for just one second because you kind of broached a subject — about things being written about you. You’ve been famous for a very long time and you’ve been in tabloids. I interviewed Cloris Leachman last month. And I asked her, “What do you think about tabloids?” And she made a really good point. She said, “Well, you know, you have to remember that this is their job so you have to work with them.” Do you agree with that?

HILARY: To a certain extent, but no, not really. They make my life hell every single day and the sensitive side of me thinks that it’s a tough world out there and people are struggling and a job is a job. There’s such a want for tabloid stories and pictures, which I kind of understand. You know, these people are making a ton of money and the job’s not that hard, I don’t think. But I also think it’s disgusting and there need to be laws about it. I’d be a lot more willing to work with them if it was one day out of the week that they got to follow me. But it’s annoying. There’s no freedom. I feel trapped every single day.
wOw: I would think. HILARY: You know, I’m not trying to make people feel sorry for me because I also have a wonderful job. And I never got into the business because I wanted to be famous. I loved acting, and I loved singing. It’s just like someone typing all day. They don’t want carpal tunnel, but it comes along with the territory.wOw: You just said you have a wonderful job, which is true. You’re young, you’re wealthy, you’re popular. So why take the time to work with these nonprofits? Is it something that you feel a celebrity has a responsibility to do, or is this part of your upbringing? This giving back?HILARY: I think it’s both. My mom grew up very poor and made a great career for herself before she had my sister and I. She always made it very important in our household to, you know, adopt families during Christmas and cook for them on Christmas day. Instead of getting toys on Christmas we would adopt families that had kids our age and give them the toys we were given. My mom would really explain it to us from a young age: other people are not as privileged as we are, they were really struggling, and it’s important to give back to your community. But I think now, especially that I have a name that people might pay attention to, it is really important to raise awareness and to use that for good. wOw: You also have this organization, Blessings in a Backpack, which I think is really, really cool. Basically you give impoverished youth food to take home for the weekends, right?HILARY: Yes.wOw: Did you create this group? Or is this just something you’re involved with?HILARY: When I first started touring I met this man named Stan Curtis, who started USA Harvest. And he contacted my mom and my manager at the time and said, “Hilary has been selling arenas out for two months straight. She’s got another four months on tour coming up and if she asks her fans, each one of them, to just bring one can of food, you have no idea how many people you would feed.” And I started doing that. It was so easy. wOw: Yeah?HILARY: You wouldn’t believe how many teenagers and parents were coming with, like, carloads of canned food. And we fed a ton of people and we actually opened Canadian Harvest together. And then he came to me with the statistics and this idea that he had. He’s from Kentucky, and he had already been taking care of a school there for about a year, and explained to me how well the program was working and that they work with the local grocery store and get food at a really discounted price. And they basically get volunteers, or the school comes up with a way to work the program, where backpacks get stuffed on Fridays and the kids have a backpack full of food Saturday and Sunday, and bring it back on Monday.

HILARY (CONT’D): He was telling me 60 percent of American kids on assistance programs get only five meals a week at home, which is dinner, obviously, and luckily they get breakfast and lunch at school. And then it raises the question: What happens on the weekends? And our tagline is so great. I just thought about it the other day: “Hunger doesn’t stop on the weekends.” And we’re expecting these kids to show up at school on Monday morning and learn and focus, because being hungry and trying to learn doesn’t work.wOw: Right.HILARY: And kids are our future and expecting them to live this way, and having a child wonder when the next time they’re going to eat, or when the next meal’s coming – that’s a terrible thing, and it’s happening in America. And not enough people know about it.wOw: While we’re on the subject of schools, do you think high-school students should be taught about how to prevent themselves from getting HIV?HILARY: Yes. That’s a huge thing with the AIDS Walk — putting those education programs back in schools. It’s such a weird thing because education about that stuff is so available on the Internet, but in schools nowadays, it’s hush-hush. And it’s like they’re trying to keep kids in the dark about it. But it’s happening everywhere. So why are we avoiding talking about educating kids on how to protect themselves, you know? wOw: I definitely agree. I mean, you and I were both born post-AIDS and have been educated since, I guess, pre-teen.HILARY: The other thing that kids should know is it’s not just homosexuals that get AIDS. Straight people get it too, and I think that a lot of people are confused by that and don’t know that it can happen as well, you know?wOw: Definitely. I also think that because everybody is so aware that HIV exists – I mean, I hope that everybody’s aware that it exists – sometimes the urgency is lost. During the early ‘90s, when it was just being publicly discussed, there was so much urgency around it. And now – this is not to denigrate your involvement, but the celebrity cultures that surround the issue can sometimes be a distraction, and teaching it in school will remind people that this is not just something that a celebrity rallies around. It’s a real, daily issue. But, you know, that’s just my opinion. When did you, and this might be a hard question, when did you first know what the word “gay” meant? Like what it was to be gay. Do you remember, or no?HILARY: Umm, gosh, I don’t know. I can’t say. I don’t think I know the exact time. I know that I was young. My mom had a lot of gay friends while I was growing up, so it wasn’t a big thing that I had to be taught, you know?wOw: Uh huh. Right.HILARY: It was just a normal thing.
wOw: All right, back to your nonprofit work. I know that you did the Red Dress fashion show this year. I know this because I was there and I wanted to interview you, but you were swarmed with reporters. Was that your first time doing Red Dress? HILARY: Yes.wOw: And were you aware of how serious heart disease is among women before that?HILARY: You know what? I was. My mom is a diabetic, and she’s a pretty serious diabetic. And so I did, I did know that it was the No. 1 killer of women and I felt it was important for me to get up there and lend my name and stand with all of those other really strong women to support a good cause. Everybody thinks that breast cancer is the No. 1 killer of women, but it’s heart disease by a huge number — I forget the statistics — and diabetes is right there along with it.wOw: Oh, really? Is diabetes ahead of breast cancer, do you know?HILARY: No, but most diabetics get heart disease.wOw: That’s really interesting. I did not know that. What other women-centric causes do you work with? Do you work with any others?HILARY: Well, we keep this very quiet and obviously there’s no press that surrounds it — when on tour we would go to women’s shelters and soup kitchens and feed them and sit there and talk to them and motivate women. And these are very private shelters, you know, where women have been abused or where women are keeping their children safe and they’re very protected there. And it’s kind of like a rehabilitation center to get them back on their feet.wOw: If you weren’t an entertainer, what would you be doing with your life?HILARY: I might work with children somehow. For a while I really loved the idea of doing speech therapy with kids. But I just watched a movie — "Earth," have you seen that?wOw: No.HILARY: It’s kind of like "Planet Earth." A lot of people are saying, like, "Oh, you don’t need to see it if you’ve seen ‘Planet Earth.’" I think that would be awesome to go and film stuff like that. It’s just, like, animals in the wild and watching how the mothers treat their babies, or just the cycle of life. It was fascinating. Maybe I’d be some kind of outdoor adventure photographer thing.wOw: You are an actress as well. So do you ever think about directing? Is that something that interests you?HILARY: I would love to. I would really love to do that. I’m kind of busy right now. I have a lot on my plate and I still feel like it’s a funny time for me. You know, I’ve done so many independent movies lately, which I love doing. But I still feel like I’m trying to get people to see me in a different way. wOw: You mean other than as a child? You know, a famous kid?HILARY: Yeah. And I think that people that are in the industry know, but I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong about that. But I still feel the struggle a little bit and I feel like I have a lot of work to do in proving myself. I’m still just 21. But I would love to direct. Working on independent movies is especially fun for me because you get to sit there and map out scenes and figure out what works and what doesn’t. With indies there’s a little more freedom and I’m getting pretty good at figuring out how to set up a shot and it’s fun. It’s fun to be bossy.

The actress, who’s appeared on CSI: NY and Medium, will play a lesbian named Gia in an episode of the CW’s 90210, according to the Los Angeles Times. Her character will work at the school paper with Navid (Michael Steger), Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) and Silver (Jessica Stroup), the Times reports.

‘Great Education’ is the name of Hilary’s new movie

Myriad Pictures is coming aboard Chris Keyser’s directorial debut, “A Great Education,” with company president and CEO Kirk D’Amico producing alongside Laurence Mark.
Ben Kingsley and singer-actress Hilary Duff are attached to star.
Keyser’s script centers on a young man who is accepted to Harvard on scholarship and ends up joining elite singing group the Krokodiloes. Captivated by their fast-moving world of parties, social engagements, private clubs and air of entitlement, he falls for society girl Liza (Duff), and his studies begin to suffer despite warnings from his professor (Kingsley).
Harvard grad Keyser is best known for the TV series “Party of Five.” Mark earned an Oscar nomination in 1997 for “Jerry Maguire” and also produced “Dreamgirls” and this year’s Oscar ceremony.
D’Amico said Keyser’s script is full of complex characters and that he is looking forward to the film will go into production in October in Canada.

Hilary Duff has signed on for a multi-episode arc on Gossip Girl, according to EW.com. Duff will play a character named Olivia Burke, a movie star who attends New York University in search of a traditional college experience. Blair (Leighton Meester), Dan (Penn Badgley) and Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) were also accepted to NYU, and Duff winds up becoming Vanessa's roommate in the third season of the show, which debuts this fall.
Duff told in December that she had become a fan of "Gossip Girl," and her favorite character was Chuck Bass. "I don't know why, because he's so bad and terrible," Duff said. "He is so sad that I feel bad for him," she admitted.
According to E! News, newly single Dan, who broke off his relationship with Serena last season, is looking to find love with Olivia and doesn't even know she's famous. Dan, according to E!'s sources, is looking to get serious with Duff's character.
At the time, Duff was developing her own pilot for NBC called "Barely Legal." She told E! News, "It's exciting. I've been meeting with writers. I'm ready to get back on TV." Producers eventually passed on "Barely Legal," but producers for "Gossip Girl" soon found a spot for the Disney teen queen on the show. She makes her debut in the fourth episode of the season, scheduled to air on October 5.

Just days before she joins the AIDS Walk in New York City, we caught up with Duff on the top of the Empire State Building to talk about giving back, joining the cast of the Bonnie & Clyde remake, and partying to killer indie rock. Turns out, this is one good girl who just might know a thing or two about playing bad.Our generation sometimes gets a bad rap for not being very involved in volunteer work—do you think it’s deserved?I think it needs to change. It’s nothing I want to shake my finger at, because you don’t get results that way. As a young person, life is stressful; your job is stressful, trying to have any type of social life is hard, you’re tired at the end of the day, you never have enough money to get this or that. We do a really good job of having sob stories for ourselves, when there’s a lot more need out there and a lot more people who have it harder than we do. Doing really simple things can actually be fun and be so rewarding. I don’t want to keep beating it into people, but it’s true. What can we expect?We did two pairs of jeans this season—it’s kind of a selfish line, because it’s skinny jeans, which look the best on me. One thing I wanted was multiple-size belt loops, because sometimes I want to wear a skinny little belt wrapped around a million times, or sometimes I want to wear a really fat one that won’t ever stay in place, slung low. So it just has a lot of options. There’s other stuff, too, like little shrunken leather jackets. I wanted the stuff to be smart.What was your inspiration for the line?Just normal girls. I’ll be walking down the street and think, oh she looks cute! Especially being in New York is nice, because everyone has such unique styles. And it’s not people who have a ton of money or have a huge closet, but it’s people wearing what they love and having a unique way of putting it together. That inspired me.You’re about to start shooting for The Story of Bonnie and Clyde. How is it preparing to play Bonnie Parker?I’m really excited! I think it’s going to be really beautiful. We’re shooting in the South, and we want to really show how hot and dry [it is]…and the clothes! It’s a tragic love story, and that’s what we want to get across. And, also, how young they were. People don’t realize that they were, like 18 years old doing this. In the version in ’67, with Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, they were already adults, but Bonnie and Clyde were actually teenagers. So they were very ahead of their time. They were rebels, you know?Is it harder or easier to take on a role that’s already been established?I think that it’s a mixture of both. Obviously Faye Dunaway was amazing in that version, but I don’t want to be exactly like that. I’m trying to do as much research as I can on who Bonnie was. She was a very sweet, likeable girl that the whole town loved, and she was always daydreaming about who was going to come take her away, and how she was going to have a life that means more.
